From what I've read, the lesser part of town is separated by train tracks. If for whatever reason I was moving to San Joaquin County, I'd definitely check Lodi out. From posts here in C-D, Lodi seems to have a fine reputation.
Lodi is sort of boring for the most part... of course, so is Stockton... just less so. Downtown Lodi is actually pretty nice though, they did a great job on that. There's a big price difference between the two.

I don't think the OP was preoccupied with how "exciting" the surroundings are; just how safe they are.

Very good basic info from Malloric and A Girl from Stockton. The others not so much.

Before I weigh in I need to know your price range and whether you want to buy or rent.

I probably know more about Stockton than anyone on this forum as my extended family has lived here since the early 1950's, myself off and on since the 1970's. I also have lots of family in the San Jose Metro area so I know the environment from which you are moving and the similarities between the neighborhoods in the two cities.

They're not the absolute worst areas... well, California Street is close. Country Club ranges from lower-class to working-class. The close to UOP (Pacific) and the farther away from Country Club Dr the better it is. There's a little pocket of Country Club (North of Alpine, East of Telegraph) that's even middle-class and it deteriorates pretty quickly from there. The area just south of UOP (east of Pacific Avenue/Country Club) is gorgeous, but it's not the safest neighborhood, bad schools. But that income bracket most of the school-aged kids are going to St. Mary's anyway.

Safest neighborhoods are Brookside (the part north of March, south along Brookside Dr it's crap), Lincoln Village West, Spanos, Morada.

For the most part, it's pretty easy to tell. If it's run down and everyone has chain link fences (ala most of South Stockton, probably not the greatest neighborhood.
Thanks for this information, along with the suggestions. I definitely noticed Brookside coming off of 1-5 on the one side. What would you say about Bianchi Rd., somewhat close to West Ln.? Seems to be where a lot of the cheaper apartments are, but I can't tell entirely about the area, other than it looks a bit dirty. I noticed it's not all that far from Pacific. But I'm not in a gang and I lock things up at night (and in the day), so I guess it sounds I'll be alright.

Oh, I did not see this post here! I appreciate this. I'd prefer a price range below $800/month for a one or two bedroom apartment or home (if that's even possible).

Sounds pleasant. Is this where you live? How close is it to Stockton, and if it is, the proximity doesn't have crime seeping over?
