Oh, I forgot to ask. Someone told me there was a drum circle on one of the Humboldt beaches but they didn't know which one. Does anyone know?

I have driven the northern CA Highway 1 so many times and yet never seen the Usal Road even though I must have driven past it several times. What an adventurous looking road to drive on! I think I'd be afraid to drive it in my passenger car.
Here is the entrance to Usal Road from Highway 1 on google streetview.

The big warning signs gave me a giggle but the multiple chalked in arrows/Usal on the street made me laugh out loud!

I found this top ten list for Humboldt Beaches:

Top Ten Beaches of Humboldt County, Humboldt County, California

I haven't gotten to Centerville Beach yet. It seems to be a lot of people's favorite... is this because it is so isolated?

Black Sand Beach in Shelter Cove is beautiful, but it's not sand. It's all rocks. There's nothing like the sound of the ocean hitting them, though! The isolation and lack of people made this one of my favorite stops on a vacation to the north coast last year.

It's been a long while, but I liked the beach in the community of Irish Beach, in Mendocino County.

Unfortunately, the beach is private, so you either must be a resident, or you must be renting a vacation slot from a resident (I suppose unscrupulous residents might sell the access code to the access road)

My experience is there are many great beaches in all three of the counties you mentioned. As a wannabe photographer, I find luck is better than specific location.

I wanted to see how big the "rocks" are on Black Sands Beach. Found this page that shows them up close: Black Sand Beach, Shelter Cove

I thought maybe it was like Cobble Beach at Yaquina Head in Oregon but it looks like they are much smaller than those big rounded cobbles.

How much of the beach is like the bottom left picture?

While it's constantly under attack by private land owners the California Coastal Act signed by Jerry Brown in 1976 made all beaches, between the ocean and high tide mark, public beaches. If you can figure out a way to get onto any sand that gets wet..... you have a right to be there.

Freepelican, while the rocks aren't very big, Black Sands Beach isn't exactly a place for you to put down your towel or make sand castles.
