This vote would have had no legal effect. A public referendum is not necessary for the partitioning of a state, and it cannot substitute for any of the Constitutional requirements - approval by both houses of the state legislature, approval by both houses of the federal Congress, and the signature of the President.

And that was never going to happen.

Shambling back amidst howls about the oppression of the Big Bad Federal Government. Funny thing is, these would also be the same people who declare themselves staunch defenders of the Constitution. So hard to go both ways.
