Why would anyone be shocked by the taxes on Cannabis?

This was the plan all along by Democrats in California. They now get their own slice of the drug trade, except it's legal.

Again with the “crutch” reference ... lol ... Interesting how Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Francis Crick (you know: Nobel Prize for discovering DNA), neuropsychologist Oliver Sacks, astrophysicist Carl Sagan, country founder George Washington (yeah THAT George Washington), playwright William Shakespeare (yeah, him too) et al all enjoyed smoking crutches from time to time ...

Enjoy your next morning coffee with jellydonut.

Wait. You're using examples of people who died of cancer? With the exception of GW who died of something called epiglottitis and Shakespeare, still somewhat of a mystery. And Gates is still around.

Do you think all those named in your list smoked it because they had cancer or did they develop cancer because they smoked it? Maybe a bear claw would be less harmful than a jelly donut.

And after you have nothing left, they'll tax you on that.

I'm naming famously intelligent, productive people who smoked pot. Their deaths had nothing to do with the weed. The post I quoted called pot a “crutch” for getting through life. None of those persons I listed were in need of any crutch, obviously.

And, btw, Bill Gates is still with us. ... and here, I'll toss in another astrophysicist who's still with us and been known to smoke some “crutch”: Neil deGrasse Tyson ...

I got a very long list, living and past on ... just grabbed a handful randomly ... Joan of Arc ring a bell? Alexander Dumas? Queen Victoria?

How about Chris Columbus? Hua Tuo?

How much time (and curiousity) you got?

Famous yes, intelligent? Maybe not as much as pot advocates claim. I just think it's funny your examples are people who died of cancer, albeit Gates, Shakespeare and Washington.

Well, now you've piqued my curiosity. . On several counts.
1. Are you suggesting any of the named were / are not intelligent?
2. If so, which one(s)?
3. Are you suggesting smoking pot is stupid?
4. Are you suggesting that there is a correlation between marijuana and cancer?

Just for some fun ... the readers here might enjoy:
Quote:
A study conducted by the British Medical Journal found that individuals with higher IQs in childhood may be more likely to use cannabis by the age of 30. Researchers tested the IQs of approximately 8,000 men and women, four times each, between the ages of 5 and 30 and concluded that the higher the IQ, the more likely it was that the participants would eventually get high in the future.

Yes, intelligent people smoke weed

... and, one more fun read:
Quote:
Sex. Drugs. Late nights.

You may be reading the first four words of my memoir. Or you could be simply listing three things that show signs of being a genius, according to various studies. There's evidence that shows that if you're spending less of your nights hitting the books and more time smoking weed and getting laid until 3am, then you're probably wiser than the rest of us. The three things that got me kicked out of college are apparently the things that the people at the best colleges do all the time.

I'm not saying it's smart to smoke weed ... I am pointing out that smoking weed doesn't equate to using a crutch or being stupid. Among other benign points: pot has the lowest incidence of abuse of any recreational substance. Not such a stupid choice if one is looking to kick back a bit from time to time.

Beats a jellydonut habit for sure

Nope. Not suggesting anything at all. People are free to make their own decisions as to what they put into their body. I don't smoke pot so the tax won't affect me whatsoever (throwing that in so I won't be accused of being off topic).

I never said it was a crutch. Ever. The fact is pot is a drug, just like any other drug used to alleviate pain, take away nausea, reduce anxiety, party with, blah blah blah. No different than anything else except it's grown in the ground instead of a test tube. I choose not to glorify it but that's my choice. What others do is their business. For me, the jury is still out as to whether it contributes to other illnesses. Recent news reports about people ending up in the ER with respiratory problems that doctors are equating to its use.

Funny but even our governor thought it was a bad idea of legalizing it. Tax revenue or not. I agreed with him.

Ah. Well, fine. I'm not out to glorify it either. But I am out to debunk myths about it it's been a part of human experience for over 10,000 years ... used for relaxation, medicine, social bonding, creative inspiration, and sensory and religious enhancement. Too much of anything tends to beg adverse reaction ... and not all people can tolerate everything. Some can tolerate pot, but not alcohol. Some can't eat strawberries and end up in the emergency rooms with respiratory arrest among other reactions (like hives). Some can eat all kinds of legumes except peanuts. Who knows?

My point was, and remains: calling it a “crutch” is to be ignorant of its history and realities of use.
