So if prop 13 goes the state will collapse? All these Variables on home ownership, prop 13 earth quakes, fires, a economic crash, is giving me anxiety. Makes me want to sell my place and escape "paradise". Wonder if home owners in other states feel like this.

Well, Seattle is waiting for "the Big One" to hit any day, too. And while waiting, they have heat waves of increasing duration, frequency and intensity to deal with, plus sea level rise issues. Western WA hasn't been hit with big forest fires yet, in part because of the annual rainy season in late fall and winter, but the dry season is growing in duration, stretching to encompass a good chunk of the spring months, too...

Maybe check out Kansas City? No quakes, no sea-level rise, maybe just a few prairie fires in the offing?

Just got back from a trip to the Midwest.
California has such a wonderful climate. It has few bugs and very low humidity and that makes to a treasure to sit out on my deck at night.
We have great food and nightlife.
Many parks and natural wonders to visit. I still have a few more parks to visit.

Now if we could only get about 20 milion folks to move to greener pastures! Then, California would be perfect!!

I support Prop 13's results on individual homeowners and how it has helped people, especially seniors, hold on to their homes. I will not vote for or support any change whatsoever to how Prop 13 currently works for homeowners of no more than two properties (I own only one).

I see what has happened to Texas, with their extremely high, runaway property taxes, and I want no part of it. Aside from their taxation being extremely high, people don't know from one year to the next what they will be forced to hand over in the way of property taxes.
Perfectly said. Prop 13 is good for our state, in keeping investment here. I don't care how many properties someone owns. The main benefit is that someone can keep their residence. But, if you take away the benefit to any property owner in CA regarding property taxes and the security of not having to worry about future new appraisals and unknown property taxes, then you give up a lot of investor money. I think it would end up in shooting ourselves in the foot, to put it mildly.

To answer the OP's title question, I'd have to agree with others who have mentioned California is home, the great weather, outdoor opportunities, beaches, culture, food and even employment. There really are a lot of things to love about California. I wish the gas taxes actually fixed all of the roads but that is a separate issue.

People have mentioned Prop 13 as being a good thing to have and keep. It is. Without Prop 13, it would be hard for a lot of lower and middle class people to remain in their homes since property values have skyrocketed over the last few decades. People buy a house to have a home, an investment and to lock in their housing costs. When your house triples in value every couple of decades and if property taxes were allowed to do the same, that could make it harder for some people to keep their homes.

Here's how it starts:
A major change to Proposition 13 takes its first step toward the 2018 ballot

Ironically the only prop 13 measure to make the ballot this year looks to expand it by extending the benefits for seniors, and the disabled. It will allow them to keep their tax base no matter how many times they move.

Yeah, it really looks like it’s going away to me.

Initiative to expand Proposition 13's tax benefits heads for the November ballot

Don't forget the threat of volcanic eruptions in the Pacific Northwest.

I looked at maps and they are very sobering should lava make a run to the sea... some heavily populated areas in it's path.
