There's something wrong with that site's method because they say Calif only paid in $228 Bil, but the actual number is $456 Bil.

Right, I wish that I could delete the post.

Thanks for posting the above. It prompted me to look at pacific’s link. I thought Texas was just over 26 million. I didn’t realize it had increased all the way to 29 million.

I couldn't find the year that was used in that study. But I think it was BEFORE the Trump tax cut. At least the article talked "when the SALT deduction takes effect".

California has so many wealthy individuals and really their income tax rate is 23% which is the maximum capital gains rate. Maybe they were not cashing in yet.....so the difference.

I wish people would reveal the data sources for their analysis.

Large population states will pay more in taxes. AND California being the largest state pays more than other states.

BUT California is very much a RICH/POOR state with the 1% generally paying less than their fair share in taxes. It is really the middle class that pays the bulk of the taxes.

So I ran a few numbers simply dividing the 2018 Federal collections by 2018 population.

Here are a few states that are higher than California.....

District of Columbia 40,491,187 per person
Massachusets 17,095, 899 per person
New Jersey 15,600,114
New York 14,390,409
Ohio 12,052,860
Washington 11,996,949
Maryland 12,008,045
Connecticut 14,317,599
Nebraska 13,120,163
Delaware 19,684,491
Rhode Island 13,927,936
Illinois 12,651,114
California 11,541,710

I didn't do ALL the states, but it appears that the pattern is the states with LOTS of Federal, State and Local employees tend to pay the highest Federal taxes. Which makes sense, since "wage slaves" have very few deductions and most government wages are higher than the private sector (full disclosure...in many cases this is due to governments hiring more educated and skilled employees than the private sector)......this can be a good or bad thing depending on your views.

I lived in California during the "golden years in the 1960's and 70's. It received MANY, MANY more dollars from the Federal government during the period of time than it paid in taxes.

The Federal spends money on defense, old people, and poor people. Really those are the bulk of Federal expenditures. California drove the military out of the state during the early 1990's, the bulk of the old people come from the middle class and California has been bleeding those for almost three decades now.

Outside of California, people don't hate the state. BUT we would like you to pay your fair share given how many wealthy people you have relative to the other states.
Also an analyst and your numbers look spot on, better than my quick pivot.

Can’t help but laugh at your arrogance about California’s superiority over everyone else. You probably think you as a Californian are better than everyone else. All you do is come across as an insecure person constantly posting how great California is.
But, instead you look like an uneducated idiot bragging how much California put in to the fed to support other states. You and neutrino have a lot in common.
Fact of the matter in 2018 California was NOT a donner state as you claim. California got back 12 dollars more per taxpayer than it paid out. So how is it supporting everyone else like you claim when it gets back more money than it gives out.

Maybe you should educate yourself and get current rather than repeating old information as fact. Your credibility just took a hit. From now on anytime you make a post bragging about California there’s going to be doubt about the validity of your statements.

Haha this is your smoking gun? I hate to break it to you but it's shooting blanks.

According to the report which is the basis of the article you linked, California received $455 Million more in federal spending than it paid in taxes collected.

But upon further investigation by me, that's because Trump increased defense personnel spending in CA by $1.2 billion in 2017 from where it was in 2016.

2017 Defense Spending:
Defense Spending by State - Fiscal Year 2017 | Office of Economic Adjustment

2016 Defense Spending:
Defense Spending by State | Office of Economic Adjustment

This wasnt even an expenditure on civilians. So removing that $1.2 billion takes CA back to donor status to the tune of $755 Million OWED TO US. We accept cash only btw.

Your state Georgia on the other hand, mooched $23 billion off of other states in 2017.

So the next time you come at me, do yourself a favor and dont.

So 12% of the US population pays 13% of its income tax. 88% pays the other 87%. As usual inflated egos overstate the importance of this corner of the nation as if we're single-handedly keeping it going while the rest sits on its butt. We're all in this together and California would be in a hell of a mess if the much larger majority of the US weren't buying its goods and services.

lol - don't play with numbers to try to get yourself out of an error. You've obviously never have lived in a town or city with military bases. They pump a huge amount of money into the local economy. Is your memory short enough that you don't remember the impact the Bush/Clinton base closures had on California? It hurt.

If Cali didn't have the USA backing them, they would very quickly devolve into another state of Mexico.
