My husband is considering a job in Marina Del Rey. I am trying to do a cost of living comparison, but Marina is not listed on any of the comparison calculators. Should I use LA/Long Beach or is there another city comparable to Marina that I could use? Also, when I've looked at 3 room apartments they are ridiculously expensive. I can try looking in one of the surrounding cities (according to mapquest, it looks like Venice, Mar Vista and Playa Vista are close) that might be cheaper, but we are trying to keep the commute to 20 minutes or less as he will already be spending a lot of hours at work. As is typical of CA newcomers, I'm sure, we would like to be fairly close to the beach. Schools are not a concern because we home-school (I know, that is shaky ground in CA right now). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The LA/Long Beach cost of living calculator will put you in the ballpark. Marina Del Rey, or anywhere along the coast, will be more expensive than average for housing but everything else should be the same as anywhere else in LA. You'll have to get inland a little to save any money on housing but there's a lot of ghetto immediately inland from the coast so be careful. Culver City has some OK areas and is pretty close. I'd start looking there. Venice has some really crappy areas so be careful if something you find looks too cheap. Sticking to a 20 minute commute is really limiting in LA because it doesn't take you far. If he can open that up a bit, parts of the South Bay like Torrance might work.
