Everybody has been so helpful over the past few months answering my silly questions, and in that spirit I have yet another question regarding SoCal beaches...
Around Santa Monica, is the water clean? I've heard to stay away when it rains (unless you want to contract syphillis). Is the water otherwise clean? Can you swim, or is it too cold even in the summer? As I understand it, SoCal beaches are best for sunbathing, but can you actually venture into the water? Is it cold in the afternoon? Are surfers the only ones brave enough to go in the water? Do you need a wetsuit?
Thanks again!

I was raised and lived most of my adulthood in Manhattan Beach and no you do not need a wetsuit during the summer months and yes you can go body surfing and ride the waves! In the wintertime I'd wear a wetsuit...so yes!

The Hyperion Treatment Plant near El Segundo had a series of sewage spills in the past. However, in 1990 Heal the Bay publishes the first annual Beach Report Card, providing water quality information to the public in an A-F grade format for 60-plus Los Angeles County beaches. Today, more than 460 beaches are featured in a weekly report card.

By 2004 In conjunction with a number of environmental associations, Heal the Bay helps pass Proposition O to improve L.A. City water supplies and keep dangerous bacteria and toxic pollution from contaminating waterways.

So there is on going efforts to keep the Santa Monica Bay water clean...

You should check out Hermosa Beach...clean beach, nice restaurants & bars, the perfect Southern Cali atmosphere to enjoy.

Go have fun!

Syphillis, no. Hepatitis A, possibly. But seriously, the previous poster hit it right. If it hasn't rained recently, you should be okay.

Also, Huntington is good too, as long as you don't go by the treatment plant...

The rain only matters a few days after it hits, the oil from the streets is sent into the ocean. Santa Monica beach is fine, you won't ever become sick from the water, only if there's a contamination spill, and they make sure they alert you immediately.

aguamarina- Hermosa Beach does look nice but I want to be north of the airport for a quick retreat into the Santa Monica mountains if need be. But I do like that downtown area...
Thanks for the info!
