I am thinking about moving back to California after I graduate next spring. Does anyone know anything about Morro Bay? Are the rents high? I need to be away from that rat race of the bay area.
What's this about a mad exodus of Californians to other states? Is it Arnold?
My parents used to live in Aluras, WAY up in the upper eastern corner of the state and that was really nice but what does one do for a living there?
I want to be near the water. Any suggestions?

Morro Bay hasn't changed much in a long, long time. Some people love it, I'm not a fan as it's often socked in with fog and cold. Job market is a challenge. Cuesta, Cal Poly, the power plant and the prison are the big employers unless you're a commercial fisherman. IMHO San Luis Obispo is a much nicer place to live but it's not directly oceanfront as Morro Bay is. If you compare rent to the Bay Area it's cheap. For coastal SLO County, I like Shell Beach area better. There's a little strip of coast from Avila to just south of Shell Beach that stays sunnier. Once you get to Pismo it's foggy again. Much nicer weather and an easy drive to San Luis Obispo. The latter is nicer looking than Morro Bay. All this said, I know people who live in Morro Bay who wouldn't live anywhere else. It all comes down to preference.

Nora,

I agree with Socerer and I live very close to Pismo Beach (Nipomo is less then 10 minutes south of Avila. Shell Beach has a ton of transient renters and is going to be more to rent than Arroyo Grande or any of the other 5 cities for that matter. Morro Bay is nice but a little farther away from everything else (about a 15 minute drive on PCH back to Slo or 101). Good luck!
