Not all shows have it of course, but it is not uncommon either.
Just to give an example - a regular mainstream TV network in Quebec might show a film like Eyes Wide Shut uncensored starting at 9 pm, or maybe even 8 pm.
Or a movie like "Sugar", with no censoring. No biggie.
Dont know about Canadian TV but was shocked at how boring US TV stations were when I went to Florida, I had always dreamed of living in America when I was young and having all those channels on the telly, but Ill stick with our British TV and programmes, dont get me wrong, Boardwalk Empire from the US Ive been told is fantastic and they have given us some great viewing over the years.... but in the main the UK have some wonderful shows.. Years ago it was easy to spot a Canadian production, by the sound and filming, I dont know why but you could tell...

Yeah... one thing I find about American TV stations these days (and I get them on cable here in Canada) is how much air time is devoted to infomercials.
It's like, we've got this licence to broadcast 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, but we won't bother to produce or even find programming for a good chunk of it. We'll just broadcast what amounts to 100% advertisements for entire blocks of time.
Canada has had some really good kids shows in the past. Mr Dress up, the freindly Giant, Owl t.v, The racoons etc etc...Fraggle rock was one the best kids shows ever. (Though its not a 100% Canadian)
Other educational and news shows are pretty good like the Nature of things, the fifth estate, passionate eye, etc.
But all the other shows like Corner gas, the beachcombers, neon rider, north of 60 were all trash. And the main reason I hate watching Hockey is Don Cherry.

I actually remember being really young and watching softcore porn on cable TV in french...wish I could remember the network. Damn!
Wasn't that "Bleu Nuit" on Quatre Saisons? I remember it well...
There used to be a lot more adult-oriented content on regular TV. From the "Baby Blue Movie" on City TV to the erotically-charged "art-house" stuff that would often pop up on Bravo and Showcase. I've seen borderline explicit (i.e. Emmanuelle series) to full-on explicit (i.e. Marushka Detmer's fellatio scene in "Devil in the Flesh"). Canadian TV seemed very open to sex and nudity until the mid-late 2000s.
But we ditched cable when it started getting crazy expensive for a bunch of crap reality shows and celebrity fawning/arse-kissing.

The various Emmanuelle movies and similar fare was broadcast regularly on weekends around 11 pm during the 1970s and 1980s on TVA, which is the main over the air private network in Quebec.
Quatre Saisons did not exist at the time. Then they came along in the late 80s and I think TVA stopped airing the X-rated stuff, and then Quatre Saisons started airing Bleu Nuit.
Quatre Saisons changed its name to V a few years ago.
