I wonder if the sexually explicit turn Quebec TV took in the 1970s was a reaction to any censorship that took place in earlier years.

ahhhhhh yes, Bleu nuit. I remember staying up late on saturdays just to watch it. Saw many classic soft porn movies, and fell in love with Laura Gemser.

Indeed. And to this day I still have an affinity for the cinematic works of Tinto Brass.

When I was in high school, TVA (I think) aired one of the Emmanuelle movies with the infamous "smoking" scene. (Look it up.)

If I recall correctly the boys in school all talked about that one for several weeks after. Maybe even months!

Some of my old friends still talk about it...

64 posts and not 1 person has challenged the premise of this thread. Yet somehow Canadian TV is DOMINATED by American television programs. Why is that? Either Canadians are stupid or they like watching inferior television - which one is it? And don't fall back on the usual 'little ol' me...' argument. If Canadian television programs are so awesome than the rest of the world would be your marketplace - kind of like how American television programs are broadcast around the world despite apparently being so terrible.

I think the reason for this is that outside of Quebec there isn't a really strong Canadian TV industry that has a big impact on society. Mainstream TV, at least as far as fictional programming is concerned (mostly what we are talking about here) is American-dominated in Canada.

As for US products dominating the world thanks to their quality, this is true but only to a point. But a lot of it also has to do with flooding the global TV market with inexpensive American shows that networks around the world can buy cheaply to fill air time (Hollywood can do this because production costs are already absorbed in the hugely lucrative US domestic market).

And after watching this imported American stuff for many years and even generations, a type of conditioning sets in with the usual habit that "when we watch TV, it's American stuff we watch. it's what's natural". Regardless of quality really.

English Canada is the classic and most extreme example of this conditioning, but of course it exists around the world as well.

Do you see characters playing religious people on Canadian television? In American prime-time TV, they are typically portrayed negatively, if they are seen at all.

It depends on the show, and I would disagree with you that religious people are typically portrayed in a negative way on American TV, I've seen many positive or semi-positive representations of religion on prime time American TV. Like the US, depending on the plot, a religious character may be portrayed in a positive or a negative light. I would say that seeing an overtly religious character is somewhat rarer on Canadian TV, but not at all unheard of.

??
I don't know about inferior television but nothing can get more inferior than Honey Boo Boo, babies dressed like streewalkers on Toddlers and Tiaras, gator huntin', hog slaughterin', moonshine-makin', inbred crocodile wrestlin', dancing with not-quite-stars, and idiot women ready to kill each other over a fake bachelor.
Give me a good Canadian documentary any day of the week.

One thing you'll never see on Canadian TV is advertising for prescription meds. "You NEED these pills! You can't manage without them! Ask your doctor!"
Followed immediately by ads from an ambulance-chasing law firm, with a woman speaking in a shaky, sobbing voice "Did you take these pills? Was your poor baby born without a head? SUE! Sue! Sue!"
