With the exception of Idaho, Montana and North Dakota the states that border Canada vote Democrat. And these states mostly border our most conservative provinces, Alberta and (now) Saskatchewan.

Canadian minorities (religious and ethnic) tend to be more insular than American ones, and thus more conservative and backwards. You can thank multiculturalism for that.

It would be difficult to imagine an abortionist being praised in the United States:

Morgentaler, the flawed saint - The Globe and Mail

Even the columnist's backhanded praise of the doctor was met with criticism from people who think abortion is the greatest thing since hockey.

May he RIP. He single-handedly changed the face of Canada....one of my heroes. He sacrificed so much for his principles.

I think you'd find that people don't think abortion is great, but the unequivocal right for women to have the ability to choose what to do with their own bodies is.

I have complicated feelings about abortion, and they have nothing to do with religion. I've sort of come to the conclusion I support a woman's right to choose early in the pregnancy but can not support late term abortion.

Dr. Henry Morgentaler and Tommy Douglas....the two people who did the MOST in regards to Canadians' health.

Interesting on-topic info on the guy's wiki page

Quote:
After sniper attacks on other doctors such as Garson Romalis and Hugh Short (see Anti-abortion violence), abortion providers in Canada were aware that their own lives could be in danger from anti-abortion assassins with high-powered rifles.

The murder of Doctor Barnett Slepian in Buffalo on October 23, 1998, also by a high-powered rifle, reinforced the threats. Abortion doctors wore bullet-proof vests and pulled their curtains to prevent assassins from shooting into their homes. Morgentaler was quoted as saying, "I know of anecdotal evidence that some doctors are considering that they might not be able to continue. It's a very bad situation."

He said that he would go on performing abortions. Morgentaler believed that the attacker was an American and that the attacks were an unwanted byproduct of the vitriolic, religiously fueled abortion battle in the United States. He stated, "In Canada, you have fewer religious fanatics, there is much less violence in Canada and it's a much more tolerant society."

I feel that in Canada, the fanatics are underground; they don't dare to express their views in public. IMO, Canada is more politically correct and tolerant, but this is not the same thing as open-minded to all points of view and being accepting. In America you'll hear the crazies on both sides and the moderates on national TV, newspaper, and radio, while in Canada, you'll hear the crazy liberals and the moderates, but to hear the crazy conservatives you have to know where to find them. You probably have to search for Internet blogs or go to churches, synagogues, and mosques
