Is Churchill like 'the' spot to go to see a polar bear in Canada? or is there somewhere better?

If you have seen a polar bear, what was your experience like and was it worth it?

Yes, we used to have two of them till one died and then one lonely sad Polar bear in a pen in Stanley Park right outside the Vancouver Aquarium and every time I went to Stanley park would feed the Peacocks, Squirrels see the penguins also located outside the Aquarium and watch the lone Polar bear pace back and forth.

Churchill is probably the closest place to see them. I'm sure there are better places.

I've only seen them at the zoo.

Only in the zoo. But there is no better place on earth to see polar bears than Churchill. I've been invited on trips there several times but actually, I always passed. I am cold enough here. My dream trip involves beaches. Everyone I know who has been there raves about it though.

There's a live polar bear cam now in Churchill and Google earth streetview has the ability to 'walk' a person through the Churchill area with the polar bears.

Most years, there are one or two spring sightings in Newfoundland. A piece of ice breaks off with a polar bear marooned on it, and it drifts south as a small iceberg, and bumps ashore where a very, very hungry polar bear wanders onto dry land. They have to be shot and killed immediately, a starving polar bear is possibly the most dangerous animal on earth. I could have gone to see them, but I never did.

They're annual occurrences in White Bay, but I think there have even been some as far south as St. Johns.

Would be impressed if a single Canadian user here has seen one in the wild. The furthest north I have ever been was not even in this country. In fact, the most drastic movement I've made in that direction in this country was only Calgary. I think most Canadians would be hard pressed to be lured in to a crappier climate without the encouragement of oil money or a free trip.

However I would love to spend some time in Iqualuit before I die, though. Hell, I haven't even thought of Iqualuit since grade 6 or 7.

Do you still hunt polar bears or is that a thing of the past?
