do you find them more culturally similar than the differences between Boston and Seattle?
I was planning on asking a Chinese friend (tomorrow).

Oh, come on kids, quit fighting.

BTW, Sandman, I have family in Canada's heartland, and man, lemme tell ya, they LOVE their burgers.

In fact, burgers (or Hamburger Helper/other processed meats and foods), overcooked vegetables (on the rare occasions they eat vegetables), white bread, and PLENTY of sugar are pretty much the staples of their diets.

Mention anything about buying fresh fish, and they'll look at you like you have 6 heads. Heck, good luck even buying fresh fish where they live. I know this, because I once tried to - really, really, really hard - but I gave up. Had to go home and eat another burger.

Well, don't we call it the 'weird' coast or something like that? And speaking of weird, I don't know if this is just a BC thing, but anyone heard of 'earthing?' I only know about it via the west coast and my step-grandchildren. Apparently what we used to call 'playing in the mud' is now 'earthing' in BC. Earthing Canada | Get Grounded. Feel Better.

Naw, this is different. Canadian weirdness is different than American weirdness. If anyone did the above except for Alberta, we would all think they lost their minds, regardless of our political views. Even supporters of any of the above views in other provinces, would still think BCers had lost their minds. It's just not our form of weirdness. See earthing. I don't know if it originated in Canada or even BC, but that would be in line with BC weirdness as perceived by the rest of Canada.

Hah!

See, it is a well known fact that Canadians live longer than Americans. Cant be the health care only. I'm sure Canadians are eating fewer burgers ......

Well, I guess if a comparison of burger consumption between the 2 countries will be yet another way that Canadians let themselves off the hook just so long as they appear to be doing better than Americans, then YES!!! Canadians win!!!

But, see my point really was that Canadians eat PLENTY of processed, pre - packaged and junk food. Period. If they didn't, then McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, Costco, et al would have pulled out of Canada years ago. Clearly, Canadians and junk food have a tight relationship. Not to mention that since they're watching all the same garbage TV that Americans watch, they, too, spend ample time sitting on their duffs.

Which reminds me: perhaps my eyes are getting worse that I imagine, but I see LOTS of overweight, out - of - shape Canadians. No, not as many as in the US, but let's face it, Canadians aren't exactly the slimmest, fittest bunch on the planet.

Ergo, it's probably best not to be tooting that horn of yours too loudly.

It's not weird in the west, it's normal. It just seems weird to people who are afraid to try newer holistic health modalities.

Earthing as it's named and practised today didn't start in BC, or in Canada. It was introduced by an Arizona fellow named Ober in the late 1990's. But there are Earthing Institutes in both Canada and USA and the practise has spread around the world.

It's nothing new actually, just a new name for another New Age variation on using earth energies, other examples being the use of crystal energy and crystal healing practises which is an alternative health thing that started in the late 1960's. Or taking mud baths or being covered in sand. Or getting a hot stone massage, or sitting inside a salt cave.

But it certainly does all fit in with the west coast new age holistic and alternative health movements that have always been common from BC to California. On the west coast in both countries it's just perfectly natural, nothing weird about it at all.

Problem is that in all the situations that you mentioned, BC has no power. SSM, firearms, criminal penalties, and abortion are all federal government matters, according to s. 91 of the constitution and Supreme Court caselaw.

Suggest you use examples that are within provincial jurisdiction (ss. 92-95 of the constitution):

"But if all of a sudden the province of B.C. decided to hike its excise tax on gasoline to $3 a liter, prevent credit checks of potential renters, instituted a $25/hr minimum wage, and removed statutory vacation entitlements from employees ----- people all over the rest of Canada would think that BC had gone nuts!"

Well, that was what I said, I thought. Canadian weirdness takes different forms than American weirdness. Earthing is way less weird in BC than it would be for BCers to suddenly take up all those American normalities sandman mentioned. His examples might not be weird in the US (at least certain areas of it) but they would be weird almost anywhere, here.

But what I gathered about Earthing, whilst trying to figure out how exactly that might tie into me figuring out what to buy my step-grandchildren as gifts, was that it boiled down to going barefoot and playing in the mud. I guess I am still more or less an earther in that event, although the playing in the mud these days is more by accident than on purpose.

But calling it Earthing here in Manitoba would be highly weird.
