To me, it’s interesting that Quebec, with an even greater French heritage than the Gulf Coast, doesn’t celebrate Mardi Gras.

The huge winter festival in Québec City known as Carnaval actually started out as a mardi gras type of thing.

But few people remember that today, aside from one line in the theme song.

Carnaval
Mardi gras
Carnaval
À Québec
C'est tout un festival

Is QC’s festival as raucous as New Orleans’ Mardi Gras?

No but it's still pretty good considering how cold it is most of the time.

It's admittedly a lot more fun (more of a real party) than the Winterlude (Bal de Neige) festival in Ottawa-Gatineau.

There was definitely more of a party atmosphere in the 1980s and into the 1990s, though it was never on the level of Quebec City it's true.

Can't say I have been to the winter carnival in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, so you've got me beat on that front!
