I try not to judge others, but yes, it was strange to have the owner leave at the critical moment. She told me she had sat up with her cat two nights just after the cat stopped eating thinking she was going to pass.
The getaway was for her husband's birthday and was with two other couples. Owner found the process too painful to watch, had said goodbye to her kitty, and decided not to cancel her trip away. I hesitated about taking on the job, but I'd known the cat for a year and wondered if it might not be better for the cat to take the final trip to the vet...but owner decided to let her die at home as the cat would freak out during vet visits..
Was this the right decision for her? for the cat? for me?? I don't know...I do know this was the hardest pet sitting assignment I've ever had and Ive vowed not to take on another one with an acutely ill cat or dog..hospice care is just too painful when one loves animals...even if the animals involved are not one's own...
