Wow. This one hurts. I grew up with this guy. As a kid, I watched all his movies. He was there right there with Eastwood, Bronson, McQueen, Norris...the guys whose movies were in regular rotation in my household.
Burt was a really underrated actor, IMO. Sure, he's best known for playing the Bandit, and then Gator McKlusky, and then tough guy Lewis from Deliverance, and then, I guess, Jack Horner from Boogie Nights (a movie that put him back on the map, so to speak), but he could do anything with the right role. I'll admit straight away that I loved his wise-cracking personas — Bandit Darville and Sonny Hooper — the best. To me, that's the kind of guy I'll remember Burt as. He was awesome.
In my book, this is as iconic a portrait as that of any other actor.
So sorry to hear this. RIP, and say hi to Jackie Gleason.
