I'm looking into getting an iPhone 6 in the next few months - it will be a much needed upgrade for me. Right now I'm under a Verizon family plan contract. This time I'm considering buying an unlocked phone this time around. I will be traveling overseas this summer (Australia), and there is a small possibility I will be moving overseas in the fall (Spain), and I would rather have a phone that I can take with me internationally instead of purchasing a new one every time I go overseas (not often now, but in the future), and not be tied down by a contract back home in the States or roaming fees.
and if not an iPhone, it will be a fancy Samsung phone. Regardless, is buying an unlocked phone a good investment or just a waste of money?
(*edit: I do plan on staying with Verizon if possible)
We just bought two unlocked LG G2s for $200 each. It's not the latest and greatest, but it's a good upgrade from our Galaxy S3s, and it was a good bargain.
As long as you're careful about what deal you take, an unlocked phone doesn't have to cost a lot.

I'm considering getting a unlocked S3. Why do you consider the LG2 a upgrade.

If you're staying on Verizon and getting an iPhone 6, it's a moot point. The phone comes unlocked even if you have a contract.
You have to look at a phone purchase in terms of Total Cost of Ownership to get a handle on whether it's a good deal.
An unlocked Nexus 6, maxed out with RAM, will set you back $699. But if you keep the phone for 3 years, divide that amount by 36 and figure it as just $19.44 per month on top of the cost of your wireless service. The shorter time you keep it, the less of a value it is.
I saw the deal on Slickdeals, and we'd had our S3s for two years already. Added to that was the acquisition of Cricket (our carrier) by ATT, and ATT wanting to migrate their new customers to their GSM network, so this was the right phone at the right time.
