My phone plans does not have international plan so if we travel to Ottawa - Canada and have phone calls from/to our phone, Tmobile charge $1/minute and it will be more expensive for roaming, too (we don't want to use data to check emails, internet ... ect but it might happen accidentally).
Any advice for phone call in Canada will be greatly appreciated (we still need to call or receive call from our friends/relative there)
Call T-Mobile. You can add the International Plan for ONE month only and it's like $10-$15. WELL worth it to be able to use your phone EXACTLY LIKE YOU DO HERE.
I take it you don't have T-Mobile One, as it provides free calls to/from Canada, free LTE data (I think up to 5 GB) and free texting.
If that doesn't work for you then I agree with Peregrine and add a plan and cancel when you return.
I had a situation around a dozen years ago where I crossed over, didn't really think about the data usage (this was pre-smartphone but I did tether to my PC at 2G/3G speed) and was alerted with $1500 of charges. Luckily AT&T was willing to backdate an international plan and as a result I only had to pay around $120.
I called T-mobile but since my plan is an old plan that they can't add international plan in, they said if they switch me to the new plan, I never can switch back to my current plan as it doesn't offer any more ($20/mo).
Try an app like WhatsApp. Have your friends and family add it as well if they don't already have it. Whenever you have wifi you can call them and they you no charge. Even video calling. Yes you are limited to wifi but you can still leave messages etc.

Disable your data on your phone to avoid charges.
Actually if you have a phone that is already WiFi calling enabled like my iPhone, there is no need for a special app to call on WiFi.
I have a Samsung...so how does that work on an iPhone...is it a setting change?
With the iPhone you go to settings>phone and turn on WiFi calling. A friend of mine lives in an area that has no cell service but has WiFi. I turn on WiFi calling when I visit him. The WiFi phone quality is very good from my experience.

Yep, I use it daily in the Vancouver area because my plan doesn't have international service. Works like a charm. I don't have an iPhone so it works on them all (I think). You may have to call your plan tech if just trying to enable it from your phone doesn't work. I did, and the plan tech was happy to "enable" that option on our phones from his end.
