About two months ago, I got a new Verizon phone. Ever since, I have been overwhelmed with prank calls and telemarketers. Within about 10 minutes tonight, I got a call from the same person who had a story that changed each time they called. They insisted they had the right number. After four times, they must have known it wasn't right. I get many calls from my area code but they are all ridiculous stories. Also, NCO Financial Group has been calling several times a day.

Did someone else have my number? What's with this. I also get several junk text messages per day. Should I report this to Verizon?

I think you made someone mad that has your number. Change your number.

I don't think that's the case at all. The whole problem started when the OP got a new phone and phone number, so it's quite reasonable to assume that the last person who had that number is the intended target of these calls.

The OP really has two choices: 1. Ride out the temporary wave of junk calls and text messages until people figure out you're not the intended target. 2. Change phone numbers.

Or they could just not answer calls from numbers they don't recognize. They can leave a message if it's important or someone they know.

This is standard operating procedure for me. If I don't know your number, I ain't answering.

If it's not inconvenient for you to change phone numbers, I would ask Verizon to change it because you are problems with prank calls. They usually respond quickly to this. If you must keep the same number, consider reporting it to the police.

I haven't had the prank calls, but one of my cell phones apparently belonged to someone who did not know a single person who speaks English. Worse, after THREE years, I'm still getting random calls on that number. Since I only use it when it's inconvenient to carry my larger BlackBerry, I'm not bothered by it too often. Otherwise I'd have the carrier change my number immediately.

I changed numbers once (different carrier) and started getting all these calls from credit collectors for an Angela (I'm a guy) and no matter what I said they didn't believe me that they had the wrong number and that I didn't know an Angela. I finally changed numbers after 2 months, wish I'd just changed sooner.

there was no stopping the calls. If it isn't too inconvienent I'd change numbes asap.

If credit collectors call you and the calls are not for you, you can ask to speak to the supervisor and tell that person that if they do not remove your number from their records that you will file a harassment complaint with the police.
