WHERE the heck does THAT come from? I've never heard that.
Sorry. Cacalacky. I put in an extra L. I don't know where it comes from but I've seen it on shirts, icky.

Thanks for all of the replies.

I like the idea of "Chas" best. Folks living in Charleston: is Chas a common, acceptable abbreviation that you see in print or around town? I feel like when I've read City Paper or Post/Courier, Chas is pretty common but I want to be sure.

I'm wanting to use an abbreviation as part of the name of a business I want to start and want to be sure it's not improper.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe I've seen it, and if someone else would give an example, it might ring a bell to me. This is in regards to seeing "Chas" used anywhere other than in this forum. I see it typed here from time to time, but nowhere else that I can think of.

Certainly Chas. is the abbreviation for Charleston. I don't think there is a question about that.

I'd like to know where I may have seen it around town...somebody give us some ideas to ring a bell! LoL

I'm not sure being a native makes a huge difference, but ok.

I work for a company with several locations around the US and I often use Chas or Chasn as short hand for Charleston when I email. Additionally, the airport code of CHS is used as well, but my most used abbreviation (personally) is Chasn.

I googled "chas" and looked for anything Charleston related...got all the way through page 10 without any direct Charleston activity. A lot of "Charles's" and even a Latvian paper on page 7, but not Charleston.

I googled "chasn" and found a direct hit on page 1 for a military page link at the Weapons Station in Goose Creek...my preference of "chasn" may very well come from my days in the Navy! If you go to page 2, you'll find more direct Charleston hits, including my very own website and Flickr stream! Go figure!

the OP asked for the correct abbreviation, you among others stated that you weren't sure and wanted clarification... I gave it to you... as well as a tidbit of why I would know, being native here

that's "why" ... lol

and the cakalacky is for south cakalacky (carolina), not Charleston

That's never been a nickname for Charleston. Chas is commonly used, primarily as a shortcut in writing the name of our city, etc.
