My husband has two different job opportunites. One is beautiful Mount Pleasant, SC and another in the Tidewater area of Virginia. Where should we go??
We have done a lot of research on the Mt P area and we are very interested in the Dunes WEst area, specifically because of the schools. Any comments?
We hear the area is growing like crazy and we like that. Have you seen any of the recent changes to be bad or negative in any way? Of course, I know of the traffic on 17. We live in a big city and are used to that. Anything else?
Weather, people, crime, jobs, healthcare, school (public and private), hurricane threat, taxes, any info would be welcome.
If you are also familiar with the Tidewater area, we are considering the area of Suffolk. The northern edge where all of the new building is going on. Any advice? WE've looked at Riverfront and Nansemond River Estates.
Sounds like you pretty much know the area. We looked in Dunes West also but decided we needed more home and land and came out to Summerville. Right now Dorchester County, where Summerville is located, is the fastest growing county in the state. The homes in Mount Pleasant, and I'm sure you already know this, are about 25% more expensive.

Plus you also pay property tax annually on your vehicles, boats, etc.
Weather is good, although Mount Pleasant will see more tropical systems move through the area than someplace a little further inland.
People are mostly from other states and Mount Pleasant seems to be a transient area. Crime rate is pretty low there even though you are only a bridge ride away from some seedy areas in downtown Charleston.
Hurricanes haven't been a problem so far, we have gotten lucky and dodged a few, but they are unpredictable. I believe everyone in Mount Pleasant has to have flood insurance and the insurance rates are probably higher there since it is closer to the coast. Other than that Mount Pleasant is a nice area to live with a variety of restuarants, shops and activities.
Don't know a thing about Tidewater, VA, so I can't help you out there. I guess just compare the two areas as far as cost of living, schools and so forth and make a list of pro's and con's and go from there. Good luck on your decision.

There are deep water lots and marshview, of course the closer to the water the more you pay, taxes already being addressed, same as everywhere the higher they are the better the schools.
The"seedy" areas of Charleston that were mentioned are mainly a concern if you go there and look for trouble... most of people are never affected by it.
The traffic, ugh... happily, the town of MP is trying to resolve.
Hospitals are nearby. Healthcare is not a concern. If you have any special healthcare needs, specialists are everywhere.
Flood insurance is a neccesity in many areas of the lowcountry, not just on the coast. I live in Summerville (love it, btw) and there are places that will get wet!! We are the lowcountry... Storms are a fact of life and if you choose to live by the water you will have the storm surge to worry about. That is the most dangerous part of a hurricane. But...storms that cause catastrophic damage are RARE... you just have to listen when the media starts giving warnings.
Of course there are execs in the area that have to relocate...but the majority of friends that I have in MP are happy there and are lifetime residents. Once you get on the water and smell the salt air it kind of gets in your blood!! There are many wonderful neighborhoods in MP, I hope you get the opportunity to physically check out both states before you decide.. the Charleston area is so diverse and just gorgeous, if anyone is ever bored here it is completely their own fault!

LOL, been shopping for homes in Mount Pleasant lately? Yes, I could have had all that...........for a couple million dollars. We have all that here (well maybe not the marshview, but we have our own inground pool which is better in my opinion) a custom built Southern Living house plan (it's on their website) on over an acre for a fraction of that. Plus my neighbor doesn't watch me eat dinner every night from their living room!! IMO anything in Mount Pleasant under a million is junk. Heck, even some of the million ones are junk. I've been in a lot of homes out there and anyone that has a trained eye for quality built homes knows that Mt. P ain't it.
Yes, scjj, I have...and you do not have to spend a million dollars for a beautiful home in Dunes West, maybe you need to check your facts in any newspaper or real estate magazine. Do not insult others and expect people to respect your opinion. I guess all the people in Mt. Pleasant who are paying top dollar for their homes don't know what they're doing and maybe we should send them to you for your expert opinion... have a wonderful evening
