If Mount Pleasant kids get zoned for Burke, Mt P will blow the bridge into the river like they did in the last Batman movie.

We'll also see developers jump through the loopholes to develop more than 1 home per acre whether it is annexing or offering land offsets and public land use to get the extra density. In the end they always find way.
On that note, Mt Pleasant schools are zoned as District 2. Currently without a high school, McClellenville and Awendaw are zoned for District 2 until the new schools are built then will go back to District 1.
If schools are the primary driver for Mount Pleasant’s development, then District 1 offers no advantage over anywhere else. The northern edge of Mount Pleasant is already 30 minutes from Downtown with no traffic (that’s before you wander back into a neighborhood at 30 mph). With no proximity to the action, and no guarantee of good schools, I don’t see the incentive.

Took me 30 mins to get from my house in the back section of Park West to work in the medical district this morning with moderate traffic.

Charleston airport passenger count soars to new record for first half of year

Up more than 10% compared to the same period last year.

That’ll be absolutely insane if the airport reaches 4.4 million. CHS is easily one of the fastest growing airports in the country. I wont be surprised if many of these seasonal Frontier and Allegiant routes get put on full time status.

Went there last week to take someone and had to go inside; the parking garage was "full". The surface lot was "full".
Had to drive to the over flow lot, which was half full.
My question; where will people park when they start construction on a new garage? Mind you, when construction on a new building is performed you usually need about that same amount of area for layout of materials while the building is being built. Good problem I suppose.

They are already going to split inner and outer Mt Pleasant. A new high school is being built at the corner of Whipple and Mathis Ferry where the original Wando had been. So you will have Beckham for most of those inside of the IOP. Wando from their to basically its current location and the new school for the areas north.

All those schools will have a significant demographic advantage to most of the other schools in the area. With family income/education/achievement level as high as it is in Mt Pleasant (relative to the rest of the area) it will be highly unlikely that these schools do poorly. Part of why the school district closed Lincoln in McClellanville was that was easier to let Wando absorb those students into its average than bring up the scores/results at a school so many were already choosing to bypass.

Mt Pleasant also benefits greatly from being a larger, upper class suburb. Many people without kids move their for access to shopping, restaurants, the beaches, marshes, rivers, nicer amenities and the perception that home values are going to be steadier. Awendaw has oddly been attracting a pretty steady stream of higher end buyers who want more breathing room or access to water, hunting, larger tracts of land and the like. The northern end of Mt Pleasant is still closer to Charleston than Summerville or Goose Creek. And is not noticeably worse than outer West Ashley and portions of Johns Island. As long as people move there and they are deemed desirable consumers, restaurants and shops will follow. Look at the selection at Sewee Outpost- its not typical for gas stations to sell shrimp paste, deli meals or minor specialty foods but they get away with it.

If Mclellanville’s high school was shut down because it did so poorly why would the new Awendaw schools do any better? They’re zoned for the same district.

There are some large expensive homes back there, but the density of them is so low, I doubt they’re making a large demographic impact. Plus all the large tracks of land those homes sit on break up anything that could be considered a large subdivision. Currently it appears that for the near term, Awendaw will still primarily be attracting people who want large tracks of land who want to be away from the action.

Mclellanvillle had just as many kids in high school as Burke. Using the same rationale, they could just easily ship Burke kids to the new Mount Pleasant school just as easily as they did Mclellanville kids to Wando. That would solve part of downtown’s school problem.
