Does anyone have any guesses/information regarding this site here? They tore down the Courtyard Apartments a few years ago, and I just wanted to see if anyone knew if there were any rumours/proposals for this site?
Yeah large hotel and convention facilities are planned there.
I think there's demand for one on the peninsula. North Charleston can handle the bigger events that require more exhibition space or an arena.
It wouldn't work for a boat show, but I'd think that Francis Marion/Bennett/Gaillard Center could together host a good-sized crowd in a localized area (plus TD Arena, Charleston Music Hall & Sottile Theater for large functions)...
I mean there is the Gilliard Auditorium. And i wouldn't be surprised if some of the hotels have large areas for conventions and what not.

The Gaillard Center hosts a decent amount of conferences and gatherings. And yes I remembered when the TD Arena was built and thinking that it was a great venue for larger gatherings in downtown Charleston. It appeared to an ideally-sized venue to host the funeral for Rev. Clementa Pinkney of Emanuel AME Church in 2015.
Deciding if and where to build a standard convention center can be challenging enough for any city, but especially so for small/midsized historic cities with cores that are mostly built-out like Charleston. Savannah kinda lucked out geographically with Hutchinson Island located in the Savannah River right across from River Street downtown which is where its convention center is located. New Orleans' is on the Mississippi River right under the bridge connecting the core of the city with its suburbs, and Richmond's convention center is smack dab in the middle of the urban core.
I said this before The Gaillard was built and they tore down three blocks of old antebellum houses. The Gaillard along with a 'large' convention center, Riley Park, the existing high school football stadium, the Citadel's Stadium. 'All' should have been built on the so call dump where Riley Park is today. Building a large enough parking garage to handle all functions at the same time or separately.
But the city destroyed all those houses just because they wanted the Gaillard to help revitalize King Street. Pour planning and no foresight.
