Plan to move to Charleston area within the next year and would like to make some online friends who I can hang out with after I get there. I would never change my name to my husband's under any circumstIances and looking for like-minded people. It's that simple.

Some may say this belongs in the relationship section but isn't that section for all parts of the country? After all this time I still don't know much about this site. Awww, now I lost my emoticons. :/

Have you ever been to Charleston for any appreciable amount of time? Going by your username, I'm guessing you're left-leaning and from Washington. While there are people of all political stripes here, the area as a whole is generally conservative, especially compared with Washington. I'm sure there are more than a few women here who don't change their names after marriage, but I have doubts that they're so wrapped up in that as an identity that they seek out others who do the same for socializing.

I have a feeling you may be in for a culture shock.

Feminists should remember they had a mother and father. Why write such a militant thing here ? It's very traditional here, so just go straight to Florida.

So as you can see, Charleston is a bit of a melting pot - and confrontations of the old world and the new are a constant source of entertainment.

Don't worry, your freedom to assemble is protected here, as it is anywhere else.

I know of one person who didn't and that was because she was a doctor and had a brand associated with her name. I know of 3 that do the hyphenated thing. I would say the hyphenated name gets more side remarks than the one that kept her maiden name. My guess is because it's more apparent.

I would image that no one is really going to care that you kept your maiden name. I don't understand a need to create a social group of people that do so as some kind of statement. I'd image the attitude that would drive the need for this social group will be more of an issue than the name itself.

While I will admit that Charleston is a bit of a melting pot, I would agree that you might be in for a little culture shock here. As Shemcreek said, your freedom to assemble certainly is protected here, but I suggest you set appropriate expectations as to the level of participation. I'm sure they're there, but they may be hard to find.

Best of luck and welcome to Chucktown.

This. I don't think whether a woman chooses to keep her maiden name is any kind of accurate measure of who they are in this day and age.
