I don't think there's a "Religious Right" so much as there is a Libertarian view.......don't force your ideas on us and we'll get along just fine.
Yeah, I would call Charleston more libertarian in nature. Now the Upstate? Far more religious but we're more of having a Bloody Mary after church on Sunday kind of crowd down here.

Politics, like religion, are not something that folks throw in your face in Charleston. At least that's my experience. I have many friends on both sides of the fence and we all get along fine. If you're a friendly person, I think you'll get friendliness coming back to you. (it's funny how that works)

And BTW, although I kind of like the sanctification of my home island, it's just "James Island" not "St James".

Overall the Low Country is the most liberal area of SC. This does not mean it is liberal. It just means it is more liberal than most of SC. SC is a die hard Red state with the exceptions of a few pockets here and there.

Some say Richland County (Columbia) votes Blue. This is true do to a large colored and young population but I can assdue you when push comes to shove, Richland is Red to the core.

The only word of caution I would give is this - most of the very liberal folks I have known who have moved to SC have found themselves more frustrated than they anticipated. The state politics and often even local politics would skew very far from their own views politically, they would grow more and more frustrated. Many of them left for areas where the general political environment was more conducive to their views. If you believe you can live in a very red state and not have it drive you crazy, the people here won't be the problem as far as getting along and all that. Unless of course you start talking about back where you came from they did X, Y, or Z. Now that - that will get people hating faster than anything else here.

Charleston County voted for her and we really like living on James Island in the Charleston city limits. Come on down. Like-minded people reside here multitudinally.

I'm originally from Canada - Toronto area -- moved to the Atlanta area in 1997 and then to Charleston 7 years ago. You will be fine.

Don't overthink it.

Look at how Charleston handled the Emanuel Church shootings. We are an awesome town.. We showed the rest of the country how we roll. Liberal, Libertarian, Conservative, it doesnt matter, we just rock...

This. Even the Walter Scott shooting, you didn't really see any political divisiveness. Blood is thicker in Charleston.

Appreciate the graciousness you have all extended to me here with your answers -- it solidifies my initial impression of the city overall.

And sorry about adding the Saint! Not sure where that came from! James Island!

What advice would you give a Southerner moving to a Northern city in a state known to be heavily liberal?
