In truth Charleston could also be the county... My neighborhood checkerboards the city and county and I would laugh out loud if someone said they lived it the St Andrews PSD.
TBH- I live in the City but tell people I live across the river from downtown Charleston since most people associate Charleston with the historic district. And I do not consider Daniel Island Charleston even though it is. But if someone in Summerville or Hollywood says they live in Charleston because it is the nearest known city/town its really no skin off my back.
Most of them probably say that so that they don't have to get into a long belabored conversation:
For example:
I'm from Cottageville...
Oh... it's just outside Walterboro on I-26.. about halfway between Charleston and the Georgia border. In rural country.
Oh... it's about a 45 minute drive from Charleston.... We go to the beach a lot and it's close enough to shop and all that....
Oh yeah... everybody's heard of Charleston.... but I don't want people to think I'm trying to glom onto that glamour and status. So I just tell them I'm from Cottageville so I can continue into a 10 minute conversation about where it's at....
No. I haven't seen too many Klansmen out there... no burning crosses.... thank God.
When traveling out of state, saying “I’m from Cottageville, South Carolina, about 45 minutes from Charleston” would do just fine. Or “I live in Goose Creek, South Carolina near Charleston.”
Or “I’m from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.”
“Where’s that?” or “That’s near Charleston, right?” “Yes.”
Or “That’s in Charleston, right?” “No.”

I consider everything within the 2022 city limits of Charleston Charleston. The peninsula is the Charleston peninsula.
If someone in Summerville or Hollywood says they live in Charleston, I don’t have a problem until they talk up Summerville, for instance, on social media, but talk down Charleston. For example, if a crime happens in Charleston and a Summerville resident says on social media that they’re glad they don’t live in Charleston anymore, but it’s crickets when a crime happens in Summerville, and they go to Columbia or Spartanburg and say they live in Charleston for points when asked, I have a problem.
No we should not add and widen roads to subsidize people who move an hour outside Charleston but then want to commute in every day. How about they move closer to Charleston?
Not everyone can afford to live in Charleston Sir. Wise man is correct.

If you want to pi$$ someone off from Daniel Island, mail them something when the address says Charleston SC 29492. They will say I live on Danial Island.

Typo there but I can't decide if you were trying to say "Daniel Island" or "Denial Island".

Uh, no. I’m talking about the time necessary to worry about such trivial garbage.
Denial as in denying they live in Charleston. They should be proud to live in Charleston. I suspect the majority are. From what I’ve seen, I believe the majority of James Island residents who live in the city of Charleston are also proud to live in Charleston. Certainly not all. How well I know that. Or at least many will never admit it.
