Looking at homes east of I-77, there's no shortage of beautiful neighborhoods in the $350k range.

One of the reasons we are so unhappy where we are is the people.
We live in one of the very few "upscale" neighborhoods in our small town. The people are phony, they are backstabbers, and they are all worried about keeping up with the Jones'. It's like a reality show.

We're so happy to be leaving, and we don't want to make the same mistake.

I've heard that in general Charlotte folks are more authentic and friendly.
But if you guys know of any subdivisions that are infamous for the behavior I mentioned, I wouldn't mind knowing.

After we moved here we started hearing about how infamous this subdivision was for being a viper pit. And boy were they right.

I never again want to live in a place where my neighbors are concerned with what kind of car I drive or what brand of lawnmower I own.

You're not going to find that pretty much anywhere East of 77 in your price range. To keep it in perspective, the "upscale" people are West of 77 (Lake side) and generally have an "opinion" of the folks East of 77.

Again, these are generalizations and it does not apply to everyone... but I think that's pretty much what you asked for.

Assuming you can sell your place whereever you are, $350K is a big roll of the dice up there. (in fact this is true for the entire CLT area) If it's not right on the water, don't assume it's going to hold its value. East side of I-77 is the old cotton mill town of Mooresville and the people are basically of the rural South type. It's called Race City USA due to the very large influence of NASCAR. I guess you will have to decide if you can fit in or not. The West side of the highway is where all the transplants live, the ones that work in Charlotte and don't have much interest in the rest of Mooresville. It's probably closer to what you describe as the place you live now. Most of this side is over built during the real estate madness and is coming down like a popped balloon. If you can get a deal on a foreclosure then maybe it's OK, else you might want to rent for a while before deciding what to do.

Hmmm, good information. Thanks.
I'm not allowed to speak to any realtors until they give me my relocation spiel on Monday.
And then I think they will set me up with someone out there.

I think it's a question of old money and social establishment in a community vs. being new money and a transplant. When you aren't established in a community, you're not going to get invited to many parties by being a royal you know what.

I think you find more of the old money mentality in more established Charlotte areas namely Southpark, Myers Park, and Eastover. The suburbs seem to attract all the transplants...I think up and around the lakes what people are looking for is the lifestyle, and their is less emphasis on the business of others. Though there's a certain amount of backstabbing that goes on everywhere.

Default You may have moved into the wrong neighborhood if you hear things like:

"A 5-series Bimmer!" "What, Did your portfolio tank?"

"Where did you get those cheap GE Profile stainless steel appliances ...at Foreclosure City?"

"All my stoves have red knobs ...as God intended!"

"You bought a 5000 sq ft house on half an acre?" "You must be from Manhattan."

Native Reaction to another tranplant

Picture this: Ashville late 1800's, two old biddies talking

Flora: "This guy from New York is building this huge house"

Mary: "Well, bless his little ol' Yankee heart!"

Flora: "Just what we need .... another "New Yacker" with a big house by us." "I just hope it's not a development!"

Mary: "God Forbid!" "Ashville today ....Trashville tomorrow!"

OK...I live on the east side of Mooresville & love. Proud to say I'm a NY transplant & have been here for 4 yrs come next month. In my subdivision, Harris Village, we have 4 out of 6 homes currently for sale that are at $300K or less. I'd say more than half of the people living in my subd are transplants. There's a few subd's here that might fit what you're looking for...Linwood Farms, Cherry Grove, Muirfield, Kistler Mill, just to name a few. The Mooresville Graded School district (as of the last school advisory board mtg that I attended in May) is ranked 8th in the state (out of 115 districts). We are the national model for the lap top initiative program, every student from grade 3 on up gets a laptop. We are close to I-77 & I-85 which makes commuting to Charlotte posible. Yes, there's traffic, on Brawley School Rd & Hwy 150. They're the main drags through town. There's plenty of shopping available in the area as well for just about anything a human could possibly need.

I say come check out the quieter side of town. It's a pleasure living here!

I was looking at Cherry Grove last night and I like what I see. The houses are the style we want, the schools are good, and it's close to work. I'm going to check out Harris Village now.

I'm glad you mentioned transplants. When we moved to Pittsburgh many years ago, we were not welcomed. It seemed like everyone there was born and raised there and we never got past the feeling of being outsiders. Don't want that to happen in NC.

My wife found some homes in Huntersville that she likes but I figure why triple my commute if we can get everything we want right in Mooresville. My son is so jazzed up about the "free laptop," it's his only criteria.
