When your son is older do go back and do the Skyline-Cliffs Trail - IT IS AWESOME and one of my faves, but a bit too harrowing with kids under 7. In fact, there have been a couple of tragedies there over the years with toddlers
Did they open that trail again? It had been closed for a while, and was closed last time I was there. Seems like when it was sold to the State they decided to close it after a fatality and lawsuit (got sued by some spanish-speaking visitors who couldn't read the warning signs).
We went camping before school started one summer and we went gem mining at Gem Mountain - Gem Mining in North Carolina. We spent $15 or 20 on a mixed gem bucket and found all kinds of real gemstones. They check them there but I would not recommend having the cut there, as it is expensive. There is a cheaper place in Matthews that does it $30 a stone.
We had a pair of emerald earrings made for our oldest daughter, her birthday is in May. Then the younger two had amethysts and one was made into a pendant made and the other needed a custom setting. We found all of the gemstones in the Jan-Dec except a diamond and a pearl, but we do believe that we threw away some rubies, because in the rough form they looked like muddy red ugly rocks. We even found an onyx which was really cool.
The kids had a ball, and there is a restaurant right beside it or near the gem stone place.

Thank you all for the suggested sites. We went to the Gem Mining and it was great. We spent $15 for one bucket and $25 for the second bucket. We got alot out of those two buckets that the employees was surprised. We got rubies worth alot. The cutter said that he can cut two carats out of one. We also got another one bigger than that one. We found Garnets, Crystals, Citrine, Sodalite, Rose Quartz, Sapphire, Emeralds, Aventurine, We also found something called Leopard rock and Tiger eyes. Were can we go and get these cut so we can put them in our china set? Somewhere thats reasonable and we would like to sell some also. Any suggestion?

I sent you a DM with information where to have the rocks cut. I do not know where you could sell them, maybe lapidary place would know how to do that.
