I am planning to move to Charlotte with my family by August 15, 2010. I need some guidance from local experts about school/housing. My boy is 7 years old and he will be in Grade 2 this fall. My research so far shows Park Road Elementary (Montessori) school is favorable. Can someone give more insight about the school and its ranking? What is a magnet program? Is Montessori better than regular elementary school? Also I am planning to rent a Townhome/Single family home near good school. Your valuable guidance is appreciated!

Thanks,
Nathan

Park Road Elementary is very well regarded, but I do believe there is a waiting list to get in.

You'd have to contact Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools to find out if there is any hope of getting your child enrolled for the upcoming year. They can also give you a list of which particular magnet schools might still have any openings.

Magnet programs are specialized programs of interest. They are used to entice students into neighborhoods and schools that are not as desirable otherwise. If you have a child who's very interested in the arts for instance, they would benefit from going to an arts magnet program.

What part of the city is your job location in? You'd want to factor that into your decision on where to look for a school
