No, there are multiple Dams that Duke power operates to generate electricity, when are you planning on moving from NY?

I dont believe that Lake Norman or Lake Wylie have flooded in recent memory. Generally, they fill to pool level or slightly above and then water is sent over the spillway of the dams. Generally Lake Wateree in SC, on the Catawba chain, will take the brunt of large inflows of water on the system of Lakes/dams. This is my observation during my time living here, I could be wrong however.

I agree with lukepoke The catwaba river has 3 lakes and they use the spill way in case they need to and in the past 5 years I have only seen once water actually going over the spillway.

The high water mark for lake Norman is about at the 760 foot elevation and no one is allowed to build below that or else you would be building on duke powers property. Duke Power also controls the water level on the lake. So if your house is on lake Norman then you are not in a flood zone plus it would have been disclosed when you purchased the house.

Also to anyone else thats interested please note that in Mecklenburg county there is a 50 foot undisturbed buffer from the 760 foot elevation landward. There are also buffers on Lake Wylie and Mountain Island Lake. These buffers are there to protect our drinking water supply. Any disturbances such as grading, permanent structures or tree removal in these buffers will result in the owner restoring the affected areas. So if you live on any of the large lakes in Mecklenburg County and plan on doing any projects near the bank or remove any trees please call the Mecklenburg County Water Quality Program at 704-336-5500 and they can send out an inspector to help you or answer any questions you have.
