I said all along all of the poor mouthing from the school system was for additional money. Further, corporate america has no place putting money into the public education system.
Indeed. They cried and cried about having to lay off 1800. When they got their property tax increase out of Jennifer Roberts and their cadre, they all of a sudden have money to hire 500. This is a swing of 2300 employees. How in the world can they be this out of control? NVM, that is rhetorical. Gubment only knows expansion and self preservation. They will do anything to game the system to get more taxes out of the taxpayers. Remember this when all your mortgage escrows and rents go up next next to cover this rather significant increase.
When the next county commission meeting comes up, vote out Jennifer Roberts. She never saw a tax she didn't like.
With the extras that will be able to hire this year, my question is, "will they be able to keep them next year." Or will we see the massive lay offs again at the end of the year?
CMS goes through the annual layoffs so they won't have to pay a group of teachers in the summer and then re-hire them for the next school year. This has been going on for years. One only has to check news stories dating back a few years or talk to teachers who will tell you that's the way the system works. It's one great big shell game that CMS plays and the County Commission and taxpayers that are getting scammed, in my humble opinion.

Teachers do not get paid during the summer, so that statement does not make much if any sense.
They get medical benefits and accrue retirement benefits if they stay as employees.
Been in education for decades and this doesn't really add up. Due process would put an end to this practice PDQ. I've never heard of a district doing such a thing and getting away with it. There are no unions in the Carolinas but there are plenty of lawyers who'd jump all over this.
Also, teachers' benefits are generally a part of their 12 month contract. "Dropping" a teacher at the beginning of June doesn't negate the length of the contract, which typically goes right up to the beginning of the next year; hence, anyone RDF'ed would still have benefits until their current contract expired, and then there is the whole COBRA plan that CMS would have to offer up as well.
