Does anyone know which banks in Charlotte offer free coin counting? I just received a bunch of loose change, but I really don't want to pay a fee to turn it in. I guess I could wrap it all, but I'd rather just dump it in a counter someplace.

Some grocery stores have Coinstar machines that count coins for free if you choose to get gift certificates from selected companies in return. I get Amazon cards.

Surprisingly, the grocery stores aren't one of the options.

My Credit Union, Founders Federal has a machine. Not sure if you need to be a member to use it or not. I think they have a branch or 2 in South Charlotte.

Even the credit unions charge a fee to use it if you're not a member. Best option is to get a gift card from Coinstar if you don't want to open an account somewhere.

Walmart in Denver (NC) has one of the counting machines. The charge is 9.5 percent of the total. It is worth it to me.

I seriously doubt any coin counter is free... unless you know the exact amount of the coins how would one know if they were getting the service for free?

IMO it's still worth it to get coins counted for a 5 or 10% fee. Most banks will take wrapped coins but some make you write your account number on each roll. Tedious but if you are cheap it's worth it.

I just remembered- I know First Charter Bank used to have free coin counters in most of their branches.

I think when Fifth Third took them over though, they got rid of those machines along with most of the FC employees and good customer service. May be worth checking in to though if they have a branch near you.

I think the best choice is probably the previous user's suggestion to use a coinstar and get a gift card unless you want to join a credit union.

Go to your bank and ask? I am sure if you are with BoA you will get charged. Most banks will have a branch or two that counters. May bank has one at their main branch. They do it for free for their customers.
