Is it my imagination or are accurate traffic reports in Charlotte sorely lacking? Independence was a giant mess today but there was nothing on any of the radio stations about it.
On Idlewild Road, a single-vehicle wreck happened a short time before 5:30 a.m. near Bathhurst Drive, which is between Margaret Wallace Road and W.T. Harris Boulevard. It appears as if the driver of a car lost control of the vehicle and hit a power pole.
Power lines were knocked down, and police say Idlewild Road will be closed until at least 8 a.m
I went through that area at 7:30 and there was no issue. It would really surprise me if they cleaned it up that fast so more than likely the paper got it wrong.
I heard this one on the radio about 8:30 this morning. Also Independence and Idlewild. I was listening to 610am . 1110 usualy has good traffic reports.
If you have a smart phone, you can check traffic on that. You can also look on googlemaps. They have plenty of traffic reports in the am and pm rush times on the radio and tv.

Yes, that is a good idea. I am in a large amount of traffic presumably caused by an accident so let me whip out my cellphone (or smartphone, whatever it is called) and check the news/maps/Internet. Sounds like a good way to cause another accident.
As I mentioned in my OP, the traffic reports that I listened to made no mention of it. In addition, I have been in other snarls where the reports have gotten the location of the incident completely wrong.
For instance, there was a fire on Idlewild near where the DMV building used to be a couple months ago. The traffic reports said the fire was over by Monroe Road on Idlewild. So when I turned on Idlewild, I was suprised to be turned around a block later.
Also, they don't even make use of the notification screen near Rooms To Go on Independence. If there is an accident the details should be up on the screen.

Do you have a method you use that works with the smartphone?

Googlemaps. It shows traffic in real time. It takes two seconds to check it, so if traffic is a regular concern for your commute than check it before leaving, rather than relying on spotty traffic news. It's come in handy for us when we've been stuck on interstates on road trips too. It'll show how far you have to go before traffic is moving again.
