If you have a smart phone, look at real time updates for 85. We've been saved many times by getting off 85 when we go that route. From Concord to Duluth (near Norcross), we take 4.5 hours when leaving at 5:15.

Depending on where he's at in Norcross, you can get off 85 on Jimmy Carter and take it (it turns into Holcomb Bridge) into Norcross. You'd bypass 285 that way. I'm not sure if it's really any quicker at the time of day you'd be traveling, but I know when I make that trip, by the time I hit Atlanta I'm ready for a break from the interstate.

Also, you might want to see if you can get off early on Fridays. Maybe work through lunch? Before we moved here to join my husband, we'd leave about 2:30-3:00 (when my son got home from school) from South Charlotte and be in Roswell in about 4 hours.

Yep, that's the way I take to come home from Charlotte as I live in Roswell.
