To be fair, Detroit in '94 and Charlotte in '94 is a completely different comparison than both cities in 2013. But I agree that this could be something that Charlotte could realistically get.

Relevant Article from the NY Times from 1996 about the Olympics. They were trying to encourage NYC to stay out of this mess. It's even more relevant today.

So, You Want to Hold an Olympics - The New York Times

Some relevant passages:mod cut
That plan resulted in so much commercialism in Atlanta that the International Olympic Committee has said it will never again approve a privately financed Olympiad without at least a government guarantee of the financing. Public monies would lessen the need to sell so many sponsorships.
Charlotte doesn't need this mess. Atlanta's debacle ruined it for the South for at least another generation as any Southern city that gets it next is going to have to live with this legacy. Then again, the Olympics are overrated too.

I had to embolden a significant statement in the article that you failed to highlight. And of course you'd only present one side of it. Let's show the other side:
After The Party: What happens when the Olympics leave town - Olympics - Sport - The Independent

Yet Atlanta has one of the strongest Olympic legacies. That sponsorship might have been unsightly, but it meant that the 1996 Games broke even – no crippling debt for Georgians.
The Atlanta Games might have a somewhat shaky reputation, but the head of one development agency which has used this cash to build $30m of affordable housing has said the Olympics left the city a "legacy of opportunity".

And another source:
Olympics' true legacy lies beyond games - ESPN Chicago

$2.2 billion dollars of economic development has sprung up around it, he says; 2.5 million people annually funnel through the aquarium that was opened here in 2005, and 1.25 million people through the World of Coke. A civil and human rights museum is set to be built off the park, as well.

Not sure why people consider Atlanta a failure...

I think some people dont want to follow in Atlanta's footsteps but I think it would be great for the city.

I completely understand not wanting to duplicate Atlanta's mistakes, but it does have several successes under its belt and in that respect it can serve as a model for other cities that have developed similarly in the post-war period.

It wasn't a failure ... some people just envy Atlanta because the city has accomplished a lot of things that other cities want to accomplish. This city knowns how to get those big events to be hosted here. Just as there is bad there is good and the city has accomplished some big things

I didn't read your post as it was simply way too long. You might try to cut down on the endless re-quoting.

However I did see ESPN. They are not exactly impartial when it comes to reporting on sports. Of course they will say it's great.

Too long?

All these post, constantly bragging about the facts and digging through documents to unveil the truth and a quote is too long to read?

Yet, through the forest of words, some thick, some thin... 4 letters stand out through the fog....
