I have read countless posts on here about how traffic in Charlotte is "horrendous" or "horrible". The way all of you were describing it, I was expecting bumper to bumper.
I finally got to check out the traffic this week during rush hour time around 8-8:30. I was on 77. It's fast moving traffic that opens up in a few minutes.
Don't let the negative traffic posts on here fool you. Charlotte traffic is a non-factor.
Well, I'll be damned. Here I thought all the people who have lived here several years, including myself, and those who have lived here their whole life, literally dozens of them, who have experienced Charlottes traffic on a daily, weekly, monthly, yearly basis had a good understanding of what the traffic situation is like. But we must all hang our head in shame, because Bad Finger Boogie drove in it for a week, and has declared it to be a non issue, thereby negating all of our experiences.
I, for one, am looking forward to my traffic-free ride home today.

1. "Horrible or horrendous" is a relative term. I travel 13 miles to work every morning and it takes between 30 - 45 minutes depending on when I leave and if there is an accident. Is this better than the average would be in DC or NOVA? Yes. Is it nothing or a non-factor? No.
2. Summer traffic is much lighter around here so I wouldn't judge how bad commuting is based on traffic from about June - end of August.
I think it boils down to what people perceives as bad traffic. I've seen many posts on bad traffic with the caveat that it's not bad as 《insert major city.》
My mom is from a smaller town and hates how trafficky it is here when she visits. So is it the worst traffic in America? No and I've never seen it referenced as such. But there is traffic that can easily make a 20 minute trip turn into an hour. I know as I've encountered this and consider that bad traffic. I much rather be overly warned than under/dismissively warned.

Thank you.
It's not a non factor but it's not as bad as people make it out to be... however, if you are a native it's probably extremely horrible given what they were used to in the late 90's.
Charlotte is the next Detroit and crime is rampant too
Of course Charlotte's traffic is a breeze, our rush hour doesn't start at 5 AM like DC's. However there are some annoyances areas. I-77 from both ends in Mecklenburg County will be a problem, only I-77 from Uptown to Lake Norman will be widen with HOT lanes within a couple of years, I-77 South will problematic and NCDOT will not widen it for another decade or so. I'm always taking I-77 from I-485 around 3 PM and there's almost a daily back up from I-485 to Woodlawn/Tyvola, and there would be no accidents, just heavy volume.
Try rush hour traffic on Independence BLVD. Or just anytime after 3:00pm. Its a very strained HWY. Even late at night there is more traffic than one might imagine.
I've noticed the traffic in my area (Fort Mill, Clover) is variable. Some afternoons are fine, other afternoons are awful. I blame it on the infrastructure that hasn't kept up with growth in the past decade.
I've also driven on 485 a few times and I've encountered some pretty bad backups there because of the huge construction project going on.
I'm from DC, and while Charlotte's traffic isn't as bad as DC's, it isn't like driving in some tiny cowtown in Nebraska either.
