You might want to try Craigslist. Sometimes you can find really nice/safe places there.

I would stay away from Tyvola Center. The area is a crime hotspot due to it's proximity to Nations Ford. I would actually stay away from any of the apartments on S. Tryon north of I-485.

I would say that is untrue, crime in this area is not bad at all. Type in 28217 and go to the Charlotte Mecklenburg police website to get the crime statistics. I live in Tyvola Centre and have never had an issue, it is a gated community and the police academy is not far and Homeland Security is across the street.
