You can check out these towns at www.homes.com You can also do mapquest for charlotte and look at the names of towns in the surrounding areas.

This is a pretty good site and 90% of the homes you can scroll down to see the taxes. Coming from NY myself the cost difference is very different. You don't have to spend nearly 400,000. to get a beautiful home in a great location. You'll be surprised at what you'll see in the 300-350 range. Good luck with your search.

Yes, it's cheaper here, yes it's warmer.. but be prepared for a huge culture gap. Although more northerners are moving in and making this place more palatable, southerners are resentful of the changes.

Palatable? You're confusing culture with available amenities in larger metros. The problem is people moving down south from larger metros expecting similar urban amenities at the same cost is utterly ridiculous. Relocating from Philly or NYC to Albany or Rochester is cheaper but would be culture shock. Not because either Albany or Rochester lack culture but it's different than what you would find in the larger metros.

Southerners aren't resentful of change but the annoying and obnoxious people who move here with the superior attitude. As if though moving at a slower pace is a crime? Southern culture is just fine and palatable as is.
