Moving closer to Charlotte! (renting, homes, neighborhoods)

I was wondering what are some good places right outside of uptown to live.
My price range is 800ish right now

I can live right outside, just a lot closer than now. I live by Northlake mall

If I had that budget, I would for sure be looking at all those neighborhoods that MollyNyC mentioned. They are all wonderful and full of beautiful homes with character.
