Buy your ticket. Checks do happen, and I've seen people escorted off for nonpayment. I'm not sure what the penalty is, but I doubt it's worth what you'd save by not purchasing a pass.

$100 fine for no tickets on the light rail. However if the machine is down or not accepting cards they'll confirm it with the CATS operator and they'll let it slide. Never had that happen but I was just reading that somewhere (here or another forum). But the one at Bland where I usually hop on was broken almost every other week.

The fine is $50 and they do check regularly (although I have gone days/weeks without having a check on my train). If you fail to show a ticket, you will be escorted off at the next stop and given a ticket. Doesn't sound worth it to me.
On that note, is there any chance of blue laws changing our going away in NC in the not too distant future?
Don't know if this has been answered in the thread above, yet, as I'm not going to read the whole thing, but it was only fairly recently that it got moved to noon--used to be 1:00 PM! So no, selling alcohol during "church hours" is not going to happen any time soon in NC. Otherwise NC really doesn't have any other "Blue Laws" like we used to when I was a kid. Some stores don't open on Sunday and most close by 6 PM, but that's more from business patterns than anything else (except Chick-Fil-A which is run by Bible-Thumpers, but their policy is true in every state).

Huh? What are you even talking about?
I don't think he's been to either & suspect that he doesn't know where Philadelphia is. Charlotte is more noisy that Philly on Saturday - huh??!?? 30 minutes from NYC then there was the allusion that he knows something about a comparison of the traffic.

It's a 2 hour drive from South Jersey suburbs of Philly, where I used to live, to get to near the bridge or tunnel to get into NYC. This is compared to about an hour to get to the Baltimore beltway.
Charlotte has a beltway, even if it isn't quite done. Philadelphia doesn't have one. The Schuylkill Expressway links the PA turnpike to I 95. It's avoided by everyone who knows an alternative & is referred to as the Sure-kill. It's the main route into town from the northwestern & western (PA) suburbs. people from Delaware County to the south & Bucks County to the north & the state of Delaware use I 95. People in South Jersey use the PATCO High Speed line to get into town if they don't drive across one of the 6 bridges. None of this sounds very much like traffic patterns in Charlotte except that 77 can be terrible. People take public transportation into Philly as often as possible because there's lots of public transit in town.
