Probably UFOs bringing pods ... you know the body snatchers!
Cotton Howell, Director York County Emergency Management, can probably tell you what the noise might have been ... people do call him when strange or out of the ordinary things happen.
I just got confirmation from my co-worker who lives on the lake that it is the Duke Energy plant doing a controlled steam release. Apparently they do this type of thing at night so it can't be tracked....sketchy.

Call me stupid but why would it need to be tracked? Isn't that just part of the operation of the facility?

Well, at least now we know what it was.......but is this steam toxic?
I hope the steam isn't toxic, but apparently it's somewhat normal for these companies to do this off-hours to maybe elude all the EPA red tape. Doesn't sound very settling, but I guess it makes some sense then that they would cause such a loud disturbance so late at night.
On the plus side....it's not the "pod_people" body snatchers landing in our backyards.
is anyone getting any airport noise in your location? we have been and we are on the Charlotte Belmont line the noise has been horrible.
Hi Leisha - I haven't noticed it today, but sometimes when it's stormy the planes will take off or land to/from different directions than normal. There's a lot of wind today as well, so that could be affecting the noise.

Yes , the steam is toxic.
It kills everything in the immediate vicinity , and therefore has rendered that stretch from Allen to S.Point uninhabitable. Call the corporate office , or visit , and inquire about gas masks. Anytime you have boiling water in massive quantities , the impending clouds will react with molecular free hydrogen , fish slime , volatiles , and release neurotoxins.

Reason: sentence structuring
I was checking on line about this type of noise...it was very loud, steady and i ran to the window. I live in the Ballantyne area and we heard it at about 4pm a few days ago. Someone posted a video in Florida with the same exact sound. It sounds like a very powerful jet. I looked at the sky and there was some type of red jet high up in the sky. It was quite a distance but the sound was still thunderous. People have heard the sound in different states and at different times. I thought it had something to do with the HAARP. Who knows what they're doing, testing or planning for things to come. Just found out about a civilian weapon called VMADS that all police departments are to be equipped with if not already for crowd control, etc. Sign of the times...
