Hi guys,

Did anybody hear that loud strange noise yesterday night (around 10:00 PM) coming from Lake Wylie at Berewick?
It sounded like watergates turning on and off. First I thought it's
from several airplanes, but the noise was too steady and came and
went to fast. Kind of scary...

I live in Fort Mill a couple of miles from the lake. I heard that loud droning, humming sound around 10:00 too. It's not the first time I've heard and it was not aircraft. It's very industrial sounding, it reminded hearing jet engines tested when I worked for the Air Force. If you find out what it is, let us know! There's no factories close by that I know of so it is weird.

Yup heard the same thing.

Def not air planes in the air. Sounded like a VERY large jet engine or something? Possibly some sort of boat? Man it had to be huge though...

There's a Duke Power Plant at 253 Plant Allen Rd, Belmont, NC right across the lake from us. Maybe that sound came from there...

Ha! I was coming on here to make the same exact post!

I agree it sounded like a jet engine, but it was too constant. It also stopped abrubtly...you'd expect a jet to "wind" down. I considered the Duke plant too, but what could make that kinda noise?

The fact that it happened at 10:15 seems odd too. Unlikely it was planned maintenance since it was so loud and so late. I went outside looking in the direction of the airport waiting to see some explosion or something.

Now that I think about it, I remember hearing this sound late at night a few months back too. Very curious as to what it is.

Could it be something to do w/ turbines? I am no engineer, LOL, but I know turbines are used to produce energy (somehow!!!)

Actually, after the heavy rain we got yesterday, I wonder if it has something to do with floodgates on the lake or something like that. I would imagine those would make some serious noise, but I don't know if they're even located near our side of the lake. I would imagine they're automated though which could explain the noise being around 10:15.
