If you go for a Real ID, BRING EVERY TYPE OF DOCUMENT LISTED. I waited in line for three hours only to be told that I didn't have the right documentation. The gatekeeper gave me a copy of an old website with a pretty limited list of documents. When I told him that the new DMV website allowed more documents than his outdated list, he told me, "I am not responsible for what they put online." He didn't like my documents, so I couldn't go further.



You won't be dealing with rational people. I sold a twenty year-old Toyota to a guy who wanted to run the deal through DMV, I was told by DMV that I needed a release of lien!



If you go to the DMV website, there is a number to call to set up an appointment for your REAL ID. When you go, bring every type of document requested.

I looked at what I needed, brought it, and got a RealID literally in minutes.

Having said that, several times in the past, I have witnessed people arguing with DMV Driver’s License people. No one has ever won. Ever.

I called DMV in Raleigh and made an appointment for a second try at getting a Real ID. I got there a little early and didn't have to wait. There was a different gatekeeper this time who told me that I just needed my old drivers license and one of the required documents. I think I gave her a utility bill.


The camera was closer to my knees than to my face so my photo doesn't even look like me. I look sort of like Herman Munster.


I agree that it is pointless to argue with DMV organisms. Just turn around and walk away and call Raleigh to make an appointment.
