My daughter and new son were recently married in a small wedding at the courthouse. It was beautiful and the staff was glad to accommodate as many as could fit in the room. From the guard at the door to the magistrate the staff made it a positive experience for the happy couple.
Then we all went to the groom's aunt's farm and had an outdoor celebration.
Officials in Mecklenburg County say the local magistrates will have to forgo the romantic side of their job during the week of the Democratic National Convention. The Charlotte Observer reports that magistrates won't be able to conduct marriage ceremonies at the courthouse or the magistrate's office adjacent to the jail.
That's because additional magistrates are being assigned to the jail to help deal with an anticipated spike in arrests during the convention.
People will still be able to get marriage licenses from the county's Register of Deeds office from Sept. 4-7.
