Ideally the thing to do would be to increase fares until the project is paid for and then drop the fares back. Ask anyone who knows anything about the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway tolls how that worked out.
^^ Real Well. I was just in NJ for the Holidays. I heard that the tolls on the Garden State Parkway are going up again. This for the same parkway that has been paid for 50 times over. Just keep reissuing those bonds! While I was in NYC I read a story that the Subway Fares may go up from $2 to $3 a ride and they will eliminate bulk discounts on the metrocard. Nice!
Location: Some got six month some got one solid. But me and my buddies all got lifetime here

Exactly. Those tolls should have come down years ago. Instead, they just had a toll increase a few weeks back and there are two more toll increases coming up by 2012 (the first proposed increase was so staggeringly high that those toll roads would probably have been mostly empty with people taking side streets and other highways to get from point A to point B). So when it comes to LYNX, to me it's not like you can even trust them to raise the rates and knock them back once everything is paid for.
With that aside my first gut reaction thought would be against a 1 cent increase. Even if the lines were running my way, I'd most likely never use them as I hate being held down to mass transportation schedules. I think I'd rather see it be the responsibility for those who do ride it to pay.
I see retired folks on the LYNX all the time. I don't understand your comment. Help me to understand.
I dont think you understand what is being stated they will be retired by the time they ever finish the light rail so great the light rail will accomindate her by her comment it just going to take forever for it to be finish.
Why would anyone worry or complain about a 1 cent tax. Keep in mind that ALL out of town people that visit Charlotte help fund our transit tax...people from Raleigh, Greensboro, Asheville, WIlmington, Atlanta etc...all over when they visit Charlotte.
I really shouldn't vote, because I don't live in Meck County, but tax money aside, any type of well-run public transportation system, such as the light-rail system is an absolute must-have for a growing city to become a successful metropolis, one in which businesses WANT to bring their jobs to.

I agree!!! It will take forever to get finished with the current tax. The 1 cent tax will speed things up. Hence my question. Should we pay for a 1 cent tax?
I am not a big fan of more taxes, but this is a tax that would put hundreds of construction workers, electricians, and other such professionals to work. These types of professionals are needed to construct such a massive public works project like light rail. Light rail also would give people more travel options. Innercity neighborhoods all over Charlotte would become more desirable places to live just like South End and Wilmore, thus increasing the city's tax base!!! Also, Mecklenburg county residents only pay 70% of the total transit tax revenue. Visitors to Mecklenburg county pay the other 30%. I just see all good from this particular tax increase, but I do welcome those on the other side of this argument to voice their opinions.
It would be interesting to know what the difference in revenue would be for a penny tax hike versus raising the fares. Which option would produce more $$$ in a shorter period of time?
