I know how to stop the migration here.

Let's just stipulate that everyone who moves here after 5/1/2009 has to pay double taxes on their homes. So as not to be overly punitive, we will make that a temporary tax - only lasts until 1/1/2015.

That protects those of us who have lived here and discourages the masses from their exodus to escape taxes. After all, if we are not a tax haven for the overly taxed . . . maybe they will stop coming.

Then we can catch up on our infrastructure b/f the next wave of immigrants starts in 2015.

I think you just set the legislature's heart aflutter. But taxation is much like Lay's potato chips: bet you can't just levy just one.

HEE HEE HEE.

Jack and Art: you both speak the truth. No such thing as a temporary tax, but in true politician style, I will promise you that it will be temporary . . . and worry about reneging on that promise later.

Of course I want taxes when it benefits us. Heaven knows an astonishing portion of the people who come here start bitching and complaining about SERVICES (well - the lack of services) they find here. So I figure . . . put your money where you mouth is. If you really want to move here so badly, pay for it!!! But those of us who are already here . . . why should we have to pay for more schools and roads just cause all these people fleeing higher taxes have decided to land here in Charlotte?

I think it is called protectionism.

Yeah, let's grow enough hemp to re-open some of the empty mills!

Ani, I think your heart is set in the right place, but I honestly don't think it would work....hear me out....

Say you impose 1% tax on the value of the home you buy here (in North Carolina). Any time you impose taxes, it lowers volume (ie raising taxes on smoking will cut smoking rates). Just like raising taxes on newcomers will drive those people to SC and anywhere else they feel taxes would be lower.

Sure, it would benefit you Joe Lifelong Homeowner, but politicians want more tax revenue, its in their blood.....just my .02

If groups of people wanted to keep newcomers out that bad, why havent' they gotten together and fought it w/their respective towns when it was occuring??? Now everyone is late to the game so to speak.
