I will be moving up soon and my future roommate / old friend, who is already up there, is thinking we should move up to Birkdale / Huntersville. I will be working next to the Charlotte / Douglas airport. Looking at the commute and was wondering how long, approximately, it would be on I-77 and if back roads would be any better.

I was looking at 73 to 115 or 23 to 85. Mapquest has be going from 73 to 23 to MT HOLLY-HUNTERSVILLE RD to OAKDALE RD to HOVIS RD ect.

Any ideas on better ways to go and estimated driving times?

P.S. Currently I think my work shift will be 9-6

Once 485 opens up from 77 to 85 you will have a easy commute. 77 - 85 would be best during the school year IMO. Once you get on 85 its smooth sailing.

Not sure about the part from I-77 to I-85. I want to say around 2008. The entire loop will not be completed until 2013.

Another option to consider especially on rainy days (when traffic backs up on 77 and weekends (on reverse commute) when people slow to craw to look at the lake or boaters You can from Birkdale take Hwy 73 turn left on Beatties Ford then right onto 85 to the airport.
