I've come to realize this is just a troll, or a person, expressing the mentality of some of people, i.e. you continue to give hand outs, people will live on them. No reasonable, responsable person would want to live on unemployment. It's not magic money, it comes from the tax payer, the government survives on the taxpayer.

Actually I am just telling it like it is. I lost my job in August 2008 and have been collecting unemployment for 51 weeks now. I would actually get the same amount from unemployment as compared to working at a 40 hour a week job at much less of a wage. Alot of people are in the same situation I am in now. I guess I am just so discouraged that I just don't care anymore. I figure whatever happens will happen. I just hope the banking industry comes back like it was 2 years ago.

Tim, the banking industry is not coming back like it was two years ago. It is not coming back like it was 5 years ago.

You need to focus on some other sector for a job. If you are in finance, do you have skills that can be transferred to accounting? You are gonna need to broaden your list of potential employers to include other industries. That, or send out resumes to other cities. I am just being truthful here and hoping you will find a job soon.

Unfortunately, Tim is not alone in his thinking. There are many who are riding the unemployment system and who do nothing besides collect the check. In my office, we sometimes get calls from people we never hear from, except when their payment doesn't get to their account on the day it usually does. I've had employers tell me they can't find anyone to fill their job, and other employers who I've told we've referred X number of people to them, only to be told that far, far fewer actually showed up to apply for the job. We can't seem to give the jobs away. And some of those that do come to search for jobs aren't dressed fit to even clean a hog pen.

Conversely, there are others who are in the office several times a week looking, looking, looking...legitimately yearning for work, and can't find anything. But they are far fewer than the other crowd.

Yes, I, as a taxpayer, am frustrated, but also I, as an ESC employee am equally as frustrated at what is allowed to go on. But I'm just a peon. I try to be empathetic, sympathetic and supportive because the Commission as a whole has failed to really crack down on people.

I am of the belief that before ANY extension is granted, claimants should be required to come to the office, show their work search records, have some sort of a game plan, be required to come to the office AT LEAST on a weekly basis, etc. A coworker of mine had a gentlemen a couple months ago whose benefits had been completely exhausted. "Well, I guess I'm gonna have to look for a job", he said. Uhhh...yah...that's the idea.

Tim, all I can tell ya is while it's tempting to remain on UI since it's virtually "Free" money being handed out to you, you're doing yourself NO favors. There are a lot of negative consequences - gaps in employment, not putting any wages in your base period, loss of skills, no benefits, etc. But you've already made up your mind...it's no use to try and educate you now on the right thing to do.

Wow , this is some thread... the idea that someone thinks they should get unemployment for YEARS is insane. What happens when unemployment runs out...tent cities and bread lines. If you think that can't happen here...wanna buy a bridge?

I also think that expecting someone with multiple degrees to scrub toilets for minimum wage is unreasonable. But I do believe in personal sacrifice, so if you don't want to do whatever job you can find in Charlotte...then the only choice is to look elsewhere.

I know plenty of families that the adults are now working in different states because thats where the jobs are.

By the way Tim... you know you are going to have to pay taxes on Unemployment, don't you?

They go into survival mode and will do whatever it takes to survive.
Post of the week!

You already alluded to not doing work that was beneath you.
I already 'do what it takes to survive', working sometimes 80 hrs a week.
More accurately I do that to support the lifestyle I desire, but still...

I cannot help but think something has been lost post jet-age.
The sense of family, lifelong friends, & home.
Sure we are free to move around the world, but you do lose your support group if things go horribly wrong.

FWIW, many times I do sweat my butt off, but I call it 'work'.
I wish you the best Tim, but IMHO you need a bit of an attitude adjustment...

They said college was the only way to go but I can't even get a min. wage job at Walmart with my level of education. Maybe I should tell people I only have a high school diploma?
You have to be kidding.

Go to a senior citizen center & ask the folks about the Depression & how people got by. Unemployment wasn't invented yet. People went from being executives to digging ditches.

Better hurry, though, the Depression kids are dieing off, fast.

JDLjr . . . really appreciate your thoughts on this subject. I can only imagine what your whole office is dealing with since we have so many unemployed folks in this region.

So what basis do you have for this assertion? I love the grandiose negativity. Same crap as what came from the shmucks who forcasted $10 gasoline. 18% national unemployment is impossible. If it ever got that bad the whole country would collapse. It is physically impossible to have a national rate that high. My basis for that is the way economic cycles and capitalist business structures work. Now if a foreign object, like say socialism, gets introduced then all bets are off. My assumption is CharlotteCharlotte is a fear mongering dummy or he/she forsees a boat load of national debt in our future. I will definitely buy the latter.

Tim,

My wife is in the same situation as you. She lost her job over a year ago and has yet to find anything. I can understand the frustration believe me. As other posters have stated you have got to change your outlook on this. To put it bluntly the days of sitting back at the candy a** bank job and collecting the paycheck are over. I know a lot of ex-bank employees that were quite frankly pampered in their former positions and are now having a hard time adjusting to the job market. When life is beating you down do not just give up. Getting a job is just a numbers game. Odds are if you talk to enough people and knock on enough doors eventually you will land something. It may not be like your former bank job but it will be at least a start. From reading your post it sounds to me like you might need a little spirit check. As my sales manager says "rejection is great for you it builds character." There....I will get off of my soap box now. Just my .02
