I was told by a coworker that he puts lime in his grass and garden and never has trouble with snakes. Anyone else do this or heard of doing this?

He also crushes up moth balls and puts them on his front porch and the snakes also stay away. Again anyone do this or hear about it?

I have heard the moth ball thing . . . don't know if it really works or not. Have heard people say it does work and others say - don't bother. I have done it myself in the past.

The best way to keep snakes from around your house is to have cats.

10 years later you find out your kids have a rare form of cancer.....Better off just letting nature be nature (and this is coming from someone who also does not like snakes).

Lol, the only kids that I will have will run on four legs and bark. Not really a cat fan and not sure if the place where I am going to live will allow outside cats.

I have West Highland White Terrier and nothing is allowed or will survive in my yard. They look like fluffy and cute lap dogs, but they actually are tenacious little killers. No snake will stand a chance.

mothballs contain naphthalene, not sulphur.

mothballs repel insects because it sublimes (goes directly from a solid to a gas) at room temperature. The gas displaces oxygen and is a respiratory irritant and poison. That's why they are used indoors in confined spaces (wardrobes, closets, etc.)...

I don't see how mothballs could have much effect in the outside atmosphere... gas replenish times are too rapid to cause any real toxicity or irritation.

Lime does absolutely nothing in regards to repelling snakes. And Native Son is correct on the active ingredient in mothballs. It's naphthalene, which is a fumigant. It is supposed to work so long as it emits an odor. Also sulfur is the other ingredient that is used in snake repellents. The sulfur is supposed to affect their sense of feel and the naphthalene is supposed to be detected with their tongue and transmitted to the Jacobson organ which has to do with smell, etc. 99.9% of the snakes in our area are harmless and in fact, beneficial.

I use Moth Balls, no snake issues.. Not sure if it is the moth balls, but I have read, in snake reference guides, not forums, that it effects their sense of smell.

Hi!

If you have dogs, be careful about putting moth balls out. Here's a website that talks about it, along with other things that can be harmful to dogs and cats. (I just googled it, lol, I don't own the site or have anything to do with it for the record).
